Why Does Cardinal Dolan Oppose Law that Would Prevent Abortions?
By Barry Goldstein
Cardinal Dolan expressed pleasure at being called consistent particularly concerning his pro-life position. His strong opposition to reform of statutes of limitation that prevent victims of child sexual abuse from bringing criminal charges or suing the perpetrators belies his claimed consistency. As the author of several books about domestic violence and sexual abuse, I’ve found that the research is clear that the reform proposals will reduce both sexual abuse and abortion. Perhaps the cardinal is unaware of research that victims are more likely to make poor choices, including about sexual activity, and this leads directly to abortions. I will be interested in seeing if he changes his position when he learns he has been opposing legislation that would reduce abortions.
