Police won’t arrest drug addicts or ‘low level’ dealers – even for selling heroin
The controversial plan will start next month, Chief Constable Mike Barton told the Mail on Sunday .
It is the first time a British police force has decided not to prosecute dealers, who usually face a minimum of 18 months in prison, the newspaper reports.
The new shock move follows a two-year trial of a scheme that allows addicts to avoid court and a criminal record provided they join a four-month ‘Checkpoint’ programme.
