A 1-month-old Chicago girl taken to a hospital after being found unresponsive at her Far South Side home Saturday died from a beating to the head, and her death was ruled a homicide, authorities said Sunday.

Toriella Turpin, of the 6700 block of South East End Avenue, was pronounced dead at 6:42 a.m. Saturday at Comer Children’s Hospital, according to authorities. Toriella died after she suffered blunt force injuries to the head, the office determined following an autopsy Sunday.

Police were sent to the 6700 block of South East End at 6 a.m.  after someone called 911 about a 1-month-old girl being unresponsive, according to Officer Christine Calace, a police spokeswoman.

Police News Affairs had no information on the circumstances of the girl’s death or whether anyone was in custody.

A spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services said the agency is conducting an investigation involving Toriella regarding allegations of neglect, but released no further information.
