A Novato man was charged with molesting an 11-year-old girl during a three-week period starting on Christmas.

Augusto Erik Maldonado, 43, is being held at the county jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

The Novato Police Department opened an investigation on Jan. 17 and arrested Maldonado two days later. Novato police Lt. Sasha D’Amico declined to release details about the arrest.

Police initially booked Maldonado on suspicion of seven felony counts, including continuous sexual abuse of a child. The state law concerning that count involves suspects who have “recurring access to the child.”

The continuous sexual abuse count also means the suspect allegedly committed “three or more acts of substantial sexual conduct” over a period of at least three months.

The Marin County District Attorney’s Office did not file a continuous sexual abuse count, instead charging Maldonado with four sex crimes covering the period from Dec. 25 to Jan. 16.

Maldonado’s case was assigned to a public defender.
