A West Town man tried to lure two 15-year-old girls to have sex, then abused one of them at a McDonald’s restaurant across from a Chicago public high school last month, an incident caught on surveillance video, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Miguel Morales, 27, faces charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and indecent solicitation of a child. He was arrested Monday after police issued a community alert and surveillance photos of the suspect. He was ordered held without bail by Cook County Judge John Fitzgerald Lyke Jr.
The attacks occurred March 14 at a McDonald’s at 2608 W. Addison St., across the street from Lane Tech High School. It was not known whether the girls attended Lane or another school.
The girls had stopped at the McDonald’s about 7 a.m., according to prosecutors.
One girl sat down while the other girl got a caramel frappe. The second girl also decided to get a frappe, but was 10 cents short. Morales was sitting a few booths away and offered to help pay for the drink, giving the girl $5.
When she went to the counter, Morales sat in a booth across from the other girl and asked her how old she was. The girl said she was 15, and Morales made lewd remarks about her body, prosecutors said. When the first girl returned, Morales asked her how old she was. When she said 15, he made lewd remarks about her body too, prosecutors said.
Morales told the girls he would pay them $20 if they allowed him to perform a sex act. When they refused, he told them to skip their first class and go with him to a hotel, where he would pay them $200, they could get high and he would perform sex acts on them, prosecutors said.
The second girl went to the restroom and, while she was gone, Morales grabbed the first girl and told her to look down. The girl saw Morales had opened his pants and was exposing himself. Morales grabbed the girl’s hand and made her touch him, prosecutors said.
When the second girl returned, Morales kept asking the girls to go to a hotel, prosecutors said. The second girl told Morales if he didn’t leave, they would call police. He left the table, and the girls walked to school.
The first girl told the other what Morales had done, and they talked to a security guard when they reached their school.
Investigators were able to get video surveillance from the McDonald’s that showed the incident, prosecutors said. That evening, police issued a community alert with photos of a man later identified as Morales.
The victims picked out Morales from a group of photos, police said. Morales, of the 1800 block of West Erie Street, was arrested about 1:40 p.m. Monday in the 1700 block of West Chicago Avenue, said Officer Jennifer Bryk, a police spokeswoman.
