Speaker presents ‘trauma-informed approach’ to sex assault, other cases

The witness stand can be the hardest place to get the victim of a sexual assault to talk — worse, even, than an interrogation room.

Russell Strand, co-founder of Strand & Heitman Innovative Forensic Techniques, spoke to prosecutors, law enforcement, activists and others who work with victims on Monday about taking a “trauma-informed approach” to investigating, presenting and prosecuting sexual assault and similar crimes.

Monday, Strand spoke about working with victims, from the initial interview to the testimony. Often in sexual assault cases, people wonder why a victim’s story is inconsistent. They also ask why a victim didn’t run or fight back harder, he said.
