A 44-year-old dance instructor from the South Side’s West Pullman neighborhood is accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old under his care and recording some of the attacks, the Chicago Police Department said.
Maurice L. Fulson, of the 12500 block of South Princeton Avenue, appeared before Judge Stephanie K. Miller, who denied bail Friday afternoon at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
Fulson was arrested at about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday in the first block of North LaSalle Street in the Loop and charged with two counts of sexual assault, one count of producing child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography.
Police say he repeatedly assaulted a then-16-year-old girl under his supervision from June 2016 to December 2017. He recorded the attacks and stored them on electronic devices.
The charges stem from multiple incidents with two victims – a 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl who contracted a sexually transmitted disease from him, said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
The girls were members of a dance troupe he ran out Final Phaze, where he was a teacher, a Simonton said.
The dancers would often ride around in a van and ask for donations for their group. After they finished their donation work, Fulson would drop everyone off except for the 16-year-old girl, who he told to stay in the van.
In all, he had sex with her about 15 times at his home, in the studio or in his van from June of 2016, through December of 2017, Simonton said.
“On one occasion they were having sex, he recorded himself on his phone having sex with this minor,’’ Simonton said.
When the mother of Fulson’s child found the video, she sent it to the victim via Facebook. The 16-year-old victim then told her mother, Simonton said.
Fulson took the 15-year-old victim to his dance studio, where they had sex and he told her not to tell anyone about it. But when she went to the doctor and found out she had a sexually transmitted disease, she told her friend she’d had sex with him.
In 2001, Fulson was charged with criminal sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl but was acquitted of the charges in 2002, records show.
In 1998, he was convicted of vehicular highjacking, a felony, and given a five-year sentence, records show. He also had a prior conviction for possessing a stolen motor vehicle, Simonton said.
Fulson was due back in court on Aug. 29
