An East Aurora School District teacher has been placed on administrative leave after she was charged with violating reporting provisions for allegedly knowing another employee was sexually abusing children and not reporting it.
The district said in a statement Wednesday that it is conducting its own internal investigation into the matter regarding Elizabeth Aguilar, a teacher at Bardwell Elementary School.
She was charged with misdemeanor failing to contact a state agency to investigate abuse, a criminal complaint filed Oct. 10 states. Aguilar is due in Kane County court on Oct. 31.
East Aurora Superintendent Jennifer Norrell said the alleged abuse that Aguilar failed to report involves Juan C. Avendano, a kindergarten teacher at Bardwell, who was arrested in March and has not returned to the district since then.
Norrell said the district is continuing to cooperate with law enforcement in their investigations. If warranted by the results of the investigation, the district will not hesitate to take appropriate disciplinary action, such as termination, she said.
“We understand that this news is concerning, and we want to reassure our parents, staff and community that the safety and security of our schools and our students is always our top priority,” Norrell said.
