What we do

“The first right of any victim is not to be one. We can prevent children from being harmed.”

Andrew Willis, Founder

We protect children from Adverse Childhood Experiences, known as ACEs. These include ten forms of trauma that significantly impact mental and physical health, financial stability, education, and our chance of having a negative relationship with the criminal justice system.

Our success will dramatically reduce prison and homeless populations and many of the leading causes of death, including cancer, heart disease, and suicide.

Preventing ACEs allows children to realize their full potential, increasing the pool of bright minds delivering solutions to the world’s most significant challenges.

Do you or your children have ACEs?

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) prevent us from leading healthy and happy lives. Are you ready to take the ACE test?

Ken Mason was murdered on October 2020. The Ken Mason Memorial Stipend Fund raises money in his memory.

We started with a question

“How can we stop children from being abused”

Ken Mason, Founder

How would we stop kids from getting abused? That is the question that started the Stop Abuse Campaign. A conversation between two friends. One a survivor, the other a supporter.

Our answer to the question is our mission, to prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences through public education and public policy.

One way we worked to fulfill our mission is that we successfully lobbied for the passage of the Child Victims Act in New York, believing that children deserved stronger protections than those that prey on them. The Crime Victims Treatment Center in New York City provided our launch donation. Other survivors and supporters joined us and have continued to since.

We are an organization that is evidence-based, innovative, trauma-informed, and mindful of individual dignity.

Evidence-Based

Evidence-based and use credible studies to educate our communities and legislators, focus and raise awareness of our work, and change policies. We support research and welcome the contribution of subject matter experts. We also contribute to other fields of research and rely on expert opinion when research is not available.

Trauma-Informed

Trauma-informed because we know that traumatic experiences as a child significantly influence who we are and how we live our lives. We minimize the effect of trauma by reducing fear and stress and focusing on what was done to those affected. We know women and children rarely lie about abuse. We support survivors and oppose victim-blaming practices. There is a great honor to being called a believer.

Individual Dignity

Respectful of individual dignity because we value all human potential. We advocate a perspective that is pro-feminist, gay-affirmative, anti-racist, dedicated to enhancing children’s lives, and committed to justice on a broad range of social issues including class, age, religion, and physical abilities. We affirm that working to make this nation’s ideals of equality substantive is the most elegant expression of what dignity means.

Innovative

Innovative and not constrained by the status quo, we actively look for ways to improve and create positive change. Because we are solution-focused, we collaborate and ask why not.

Who we are

We’re primarily volunteers. We’re survivor-led and science-focused. We care deeply about protecting children from the harm that many of us endured. We know it is possible to protect children from harm, and we won’t stop until we have.

Our board contains survivors and supporters, business people, scientists, and professors. Our common thread is a deep belief that we can protect children from childhood trauma by combining our imaginations with science and experience.

Our team mostly volunteers with a small core team of professionals and interns.

Thanks to everybody who makes our mission possible, including:

We’re grateful to receive 9 out of 10 dollars that support our mission from individual donations from people like you. Thank you. We’re also thankful to the organizations that make our work possible.
